While the Cabo area is known for its luxury resorts and lively nightlife, La Paz offers a more relaxed, authentic Mexican experience on the stunning Sea of Cortez. This coastal city is an adventurer’s paradise, known for its pristine beaches, incredible marine wildlife, and laid-back atmosphere. Unlike Cabo, La Paz is less resort-based and has a slower, more local feel, making it an excellent destination for travelers looking to escape the crowds. If you’re looking for the perfect winter getaway, Baja California in February is an excellent choice. Where is Baja?
Baja California and Baja California Sur are the two states that make up the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, just south of California. While Cabo San Lucas is at the very tip of the peninsula, La Paz is about two hours north, facing the tranquil waters of the Sea of Cortez.

Balandra is unique because it is a protected natural area, meaning visitor access is limited. The bay is surrounded by rocky hills and mangroves, creating a pristine and ecologically sensitive environment. Since there are no beach vendors or services, visitors must bring their own snacks, water, and shade.

These sharks are classified as endangered, and conservation efforts have been put in place to protect them. Strict regulations include limits on the number of boats and swimmers, mandatory guides, and a no-touching policy to ensure their safety.

See the Gray Whale Migration
One of the most magical experiences in Baja is witnessing the gray whale migration. These gentle giants travel thousands of miles from the Arctic to Baja’s protected lagoons to give birth. One of the reasons this experience was so special to me is that my grandfather, a passionate world traveler and nature photographer, always told me that I had to see the gray whales in Baja. Standing on the boat, watching these enormous creatures swim so close all around, it was easy to see why.

Walk the Malecón
La Paz’s Malecón (seaside promenade) is the heart of the city. Stretching for over three miles, this scenic boardwalk is perfect for a sunset stroll, enjoying street food, or grabbing a coffee at one of the many cafes. The Malecón is not just a walking path—it’s a cultural hub, lined with sculptures, street performers, and stunning views of the Sea of Cortez. Staying near the Malecón gives you easy access to the best restaurants, shops, and tour operators.

One of my favorite places to stay in La Paz is Posada Luna Sol, a charming locally-owned boutique hotel near the Malecón. This small but welcoming hotel offers clean, comfortable rooms and a friendly atmosphere. Its location makes it easy to explore downtown La Paz and access the waterfront.
Another major perk of staying at Posada Luna Sol is that it is home to Mar Y Aventuras (Sea and Adventures), a well-respected tour company offering kayaking trips, snorkeling excursions, and multi-day adventure tours. If you’re interested in exploring Espíritu Santo or sea kayaking, this is a fantastic option.
If you prefer something more modern, Hotel Catedral and Casa al Mar are also great choices, offering stylish accommodations in central locations.
Where to Eat in La Paz
Baja California is known for its fresh seafood, flavorful tacos, and fusion of traditional Mexican and coastal cuisine. One of the most iconic local dishes is the Baja-style fish taco—a crispy, beer-battered white fish fillet served on a soft corn tortilla with fresh cabbage, crema, and a squeeze of lime. This regional specialty originated in Baja and is a must-try when visiting La Paz.
We loved Baja fish tacos so much that we went to Mack Fisher three days in a row! This local gem serves some of the best Baja-style fish tacos in town, using fresh-caught seafood and perfectly crispy batter. Whether you prefer classic battered fish or grilled options, this spot delivers incredible flavors with every bite.
If you’re looking for something different, Harker Board Co. is another great option. Owned by expats, this spot offers more of an American-style menu with craft beer options beyond the usual Pacifico and Corona. If you’re craving a burger or a great local brew while enjoying oceanfront views, Harker Board Co. is a great choice.
How to Get to La Paz
La Paz is accessible via La Paz International Airport (LAP), but many travelers opt to fly into Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), which serves more major airlines and offers direct flights from many U.S. cities. If you’re coming from the U.S., it’s incredibly easy—when I flew from Salt Lake City, we didn’t even have to change time zones!
From Cabo, you’ll need to rent a car or take a shuttle to La Paz. The drive is about two hours and offers stunning desert and ocean views. If you don’t want to drive, SJD Taxi is a convenient shuttle service that offers private and shared rides between Cabo and La Paz.
Once in La Paz, you’ll find that the city is very walkable, especially if you’re staying near the Malecón. Since most activities involve boat tours, taxis, or walking, we opted to take a shuttle instead of renting a car, and it worked out perfectly!
